I haven't had a lot of time to play with my new D300 since Finals just happened and I'm still working full time. But, so far I'm convinced that this three-pound hunk of metal is totally worth the investment. The last piece is an HDR shot, if you're wondering.
Also, an update on the studio lighting: We swapped out the 3500K Incandescent bulbs with 5000K Florescent ones. The wattage of the new bulbs is notably less beefy, therefore producing less light, but the new color temperature is worth it, especially when it comes to product photography.
